The North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Advice Center is currently warning consumers about fraudulent emails that are being sent falsely in the name of COEO Inkasso. The coeo Group would like to make it clear that these messages do not originate from the company.

In an interview, Sebastian Ludwig, CEO of coeo DACH, discusses what consumers should generally bear in mind when dealing with debt collection letters and how genuine letters can be distinguished from forgeries.

“Genuine collection letters always contain clear information about the creditor, the claim, and the legal basis,” explains Ludwig. “A collection procedure only begins after several reminders – never unexpectedly by email.”

He advises consumers to always remain calm when in doubt and to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Check: Does the letter contain all the relevant information—who the creditor is, what the payment is for, and how the amount is calculated?
  2. Communicate: If anything is unclear, contact the debt collection agency directly, but only through official channels.
  3. Compare fees: Debt collection costs are regulated by law in the Lawyers' Fees Act (RVG). Excessive or flat-rate amounts should be checked.
  4. Check authenticity: The Legal Services Register or the Federal Association of German Debt Collection Companies (BDIU) offer ways to verify reputable providers.
  5. Be careful with links and attachments: Reputable debt collection companies never ask you to enter personal data or download files via email.

“It is in the interest of all parties involved to settle outstanding claims fairly and transparently,” says Ludwig. “Our goal is to support this process in a way that is transparent, customer-oriented, and secure.”
