Fake collection letters are causing increasing uncertainty. Fraudsters deliberately exploit people's fear of being entered in the debt collection register. The Federal Office for Cybersecurity therefore regularly warns against fake emails sent in the name of well-known collection agencies.

In a recent article, Christian Giehler, managing director of coeo Inkasso Schweiz, explains how consumers can recognize fake debt collection letters and how they can protect themselves. His five tips range from carefully checking the sender and verifying the payment details to exercising caution with suspicious links.

Giehler advises against ignoring suspicious correspondence under any circumstances. Anyone who fails to respond to a genuine claim risks being entered in the debt collection register. If you are unsure, it helps to contact the debt collection agency directly or seek advice from a counseling center.
